Reconciliation Crosswalk Installed Just in Time for Back to School

As students at Westridge Elementary are heading back to school, they get to walk across the newly completed Reconciliation crosswalk.

The first of its kind in Burnaby, the idea came from Grade 6 and 7 students in Audrey Venner’s class, who wanted to put reconciliation into action. The art, featuring a Thunderbird, was created by Coast Salish artist Atheana Picha, who connected with the students before making the design.

It is located on City property on Union Street by the Drummond’s Walk Urban Trail and came to life with the support and funding provided by the City of Burnaby.

The school is also grateful for the grant from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, which enabled the project to get off the ground.
