Provincial, National and International Honours

The talents and contributions of people across the District are getting noticed provincially, nationally and even internationally. Below are some examples.

Cyber Security Students Earn Top Honours in Canada

Students in the District’s Palo Alto Cyber Security Academy held at Cariboo Hill Secondary won first overall in Canada in the Gold Tier of the CyberPatriot competition. They took the award over 41 teams competing from Canada. In the competition, students are put in the position of newly hired IT professionals. Through a series of online rounds, teams are given a set of virtual operating systems. They have to find and fix cyber security vulnerabilities – all while maintaining critical services. In addition to winning nationally, the students placed 19th in the world of 807 teams.

Robotics Teams Win Provincials and are Heading to Worlds

Students from Alpha Secondary are the provincial robotics champions. They and their peers from two additional teams, including students from the District’s Robotics (Mechatronics) program, took the top titles at the BC Provincial Championship Vex Robotics Competition held in March. The three teams have qualified to compete at the Vex Robotics World Championship to be held in Dallas, Texas in April.

  • Championship Finalist Award, Team A: Arek Hong (Grade 10), Wellington Chan (Grade 11), Rehan Aslam (Grade 10) and Sidd Karthik (Grade 9)
  • Championship Excellence Award, Team Weeeeeeeeeeeeee: Aaron Lew (Grade 11), Aiden Tam (Grade 11), Armaan Sitlu (Grade 11), Travis Chow (Grade 12, Cariboo Hill Secondary) and Racine Liu (Grade 11, Moscrop Secondary)
Students Medal at Skills Canada Regional Competitions

Students in the Graphic & Media Arts ProgramÌýheld at Byrne Creek Community SchoolÌýearned top honours in the 2D Animation categoryÌýat the regional competitions.

  • Alexis Teleg (Moscrop Secondary) and Daniela Reyes (Moscrop Secondary) earned gold medals
  • Allison Jacobs (Moscrop Secondary) and Mauve Sanchez Delgado (Burnaby Mountain Secondary) were awarded silver medals

Students in the Professional Cook Program at Burnaby Central Secondary also medaled at the Skills Canada Regional Competition.

  • Sarah Taylor (Burnaby Central Secondary) was awarded gold for the second year in a row
  • Charley Pan (Burnaby Mountain Secondary) earned silver
  • Kyler Robson (Burnaby North Secondary) took home bronze

Gold medalists in both categories will be advancing to the Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition next month.

Math Teacher Awarded

Moscrop Secondary teacher Danny Young has earned an Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching. He was the only Canadian on this year’s list of recipients. The Mathematical Association of America award recognizes educators for their outstanding contributions to inspiring students in math, particularly through competitions.
