Celebrating and Reflecting During Black History Month

This February, students are participating in a variety of activities and events to celebrate Black History Month – including sharing stories of success, sacrifice, resilience, triumph and community.

District-wide Event
Black youth from high schools across the District are gathering to watch a special screening of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at an event co-hosted by the Burnaby and New Westminster school districts and supported by the . Designed as a Black Student Affinity Space and place of connection, students in Surrey and Coquitlam are also joining the event.

Highlights from School Events and Projects
In the lead-up to Black History Month, Edmonds Community School was host to an event designed to empower Black youth and their families, with a workshop provided by the Jr. Black Achievement Society. Food, dance, music and knowledge was also shared.

The BIPOC Affinity Group at Alpha Secondary is leading a variety of activities, including creating Black History Moment announcements on the PA. Leadership students curated a YouTube playlist featuring Black artists. And during the second week of Black History Month, the Affiinity group is leading Black Solidarity Day for the entire school to show support and solidarity for Black students.
